Highlanders FC returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over MWOS FC at Ngoni Stadium on Saturday afternoon, claiming all three points after a spirited performance.

Kick-off was delayed due to a clash of playing kit colours, but once the match got underway, both sides settled quickly into an evenly contested affair. MWOS threatened early through a dangerous free-kick just outside the penalty area, but goalkeeper Aron Ngwenya was alert to gather Reginald Chinemo’s effort with ease.

The opening half was a balanced contest, with chances few and far between. Highlanders came close in the 35th minute after Darlington Mukulu won a free-kick just outside the box, but Andrew Mbeba’s strike was blocked by the defensive wall.

The breakthrough finally arrived five minutes later. A well-worked attacking move found Never Rauzhi in space, and the forward made no mistake, calmly finding the back of the net to give Highlanders a deserved 1-0 lead. Bosso  carried that advantage into the halftime break.

Highlanders nearly doubled their lead early in the second half when Nomore Chinyerere’s free-kick from the edge of the area forced a comfortable save from the MWOS goalkeeper.

MWOS fought back and restored parity in the 71st minute, setting up an exciting final quarter of the match.

Highlanders responded positively with further substitutions, bringing on Reason Sibanda before introducing Lawrence Mhlanga and Kudakwashe Mahachi as we searched for a winner.

The decisive moment arrived in the 80th minute. Andrew Mbeba delivered a perfectly weighted free-kick into the penalty area, where Isaac Ngoma rose highest to power home a superb header and restore Highlanders’ advantage.

Four minutes of added time were signalled, but Highlanders defended resolutely to see out the match and secure a valuable 2-1 victory away from home.
