Highlanders FC secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Bulawayo Chiefs in an entertaining Bulawayo Derby at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The match began at a lively tempo, with both sides looking to impose themselves early. Highlanders threatened from set pieces in the opening stages, with Andrew Mbeba delivering a dangerous free kick into the area after Mongameli Tshuma was brought down in a promising position, but the Chiefs defence stood firm.
After a closely contested opening quarter, Bulawayo Chiefs broke the deadlock in the 25th minute when Saiti found the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.
The advantage, however, lasted only two minutes. Highlanders responded immediately through Benjamin Adeogun, who capitalised on an opportunity to fire home the equaliser and restore parity at 1-1.
The remainder of the first half continued at an intense pace, with both teams searching for a second goal. Despite a brief stoppage for an injury to the Chiefs goalkeeper, neither side could find a breakthrough before the interval, and the teams went into the break level at 1-1.
Highlanders emerged from the dressing room with renewed purpose and almost took the lead straight after the restart. Prince Ndlovu unleashed a powerful effort that forced Chiefs goalkeeper Mozeka into a superb save.
The pressure from the visitors continued to grow. Ndlovu was again involved moments later, laying the ball off for Darlington Mukuli, whose fierce strike was brilliantly pushed away by the goalkeeper for a corner.
With the match finely balanced, Highlanders coach made changes to inject fresh energy into the side, introducing Reason Sibanda, Never Rauzhi, Kudakwashe Mahachi and later Dominic Jaricha.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 82nd minute. Highlanders won a free kick in a dangerous area and Andrew Mbeba delivered an inviting ball into the box. Rainsome rose highest to power a header past the goalkeeper and send the travelling Bosso faithful into celebration as Highlanders took a 2-1 lead.
Chiefs pushed forward in the closing stages, but Highlanders remained resolute. Four minutes of added time were indicated, and the Black and White showed determination and discipline to see out the contest.
When referee Owen Manenda blew the final whistle, Highlanders had completed a spirited comeback to secure all three points and claim the Bulawayo Derby bragging rights.
The victory moves Bosso forward with confidence and gives the Black and White faithful plenty to celebrate as the club continues its centenary year campaign.
