Highlanders Media
The roar of the Barbourfields crowd is usually reserved for a blinding sequence of passes, a goal-line clearance, or a ball hitting the back of the net. But last week, before Highlanders FC even kicked off against Triangle United, the loudest cheer belonged to one man in the stands: Evans Chigona.
Known affectionately to the Bosso faithful as “u Ref we Bosso,” Chigona is as much a staple of matchday as the black-and-white striped jerseys themselves. With his signature mock-referee outfit, a whistle permanently at the ready, and a dramatic flair for “carding” opposing fans (and occasionally the actual match officials from the stands), he embodies the pure, unadulterated passion of the country’s oldest football club.
Last week, that loyalty paid off in a big way.
More Than Just a Spectator
While the players on the pitch fought for three points, Chigona was doing what he does best—orchestrating the vibes in the stands. His tireless energy, humor, and ability to rally the Soweto stand caught the eyes of the matchday selectors.
Recognizing his unwavering dedication to the Bosso cause since day one, Chigona was officially crowned the Fan of the Match.

The accolade came with more than just bragging rights. Courtesy of proud sponsors spincity.co.zw, Chigona walked away with a Pick n Pay voucher card worth USD50—a timely reward for a man who invests his heart and soul into the club week in, week out.
For a club built on community and passion #Since1926, celebrating the lifelines of the team—the fans—is what keeps the spirit alive. As for Evans? Expect his whistle to blow a little louder, his imaginary red cards to be flashed a little faster, and his love for the beautiful game to shine even brighter at the next home game.
Congratulations, u Ref we Bosso
